Platform Deprecation Strategy for RStudio Products and Packages

Platform Deprecation Strategy for RStudio Products and Packages

To ensure a good user experience, we recommend using modern operating systems and browsers with our professional products. Supported operating systems and browsers are listed below.

New packages produced by the R community often require a version of R produced within the past few years, so R users will typically need a modern version of R and a C++11 compiler in order to benefit from the ecosystem of packages available. RStudio’s products typically target compatibility with R version 3.1.0 and greater. We recommend upgrading R yearly. Versions of R can be obtained by various means, the most common of which is installing a binary version from a standard repository. To install additional versions of open-source R side-by-side you will need to build R from source. We recommend building R from source rather than using your system’s package manager in order to ensure that the version of R installed on your server won’t unexpectedly change.

RStudio professional products also require the following:

  • Root privileges for installing and running
  • User authentication (e.g. LDAP or Active Directory)
  • Access to an R package repository

Platform Support and Support Services

New releases of RStudio products and packages will support operating systems and browsers listed below until either of the following occurs: (1) the vendor no longer supports them (i.e., they reach “end of life”); or (2) new releases of R no longer support them. All RStudio products and packages will follow the same platform support strategy.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, we will continue to offer customers that have a current valid subscription for an RStudio product RStudio’s standard support services for that product pursuant to the RStudio Support Program for up to six months beyond the end of life date; provided, however, that new releases of RStudio products and packages by RStudio within that six-month window will not test against these browsers and operating systems.

Communication Strategy

We will publish notices on the RStudio Blog according to the following schedule.

  1. Six months prior to an operating system’s or browser’s end of life date
  2. On or about the browser’s or operating system’s end of life date
  3. When RStudio terminates support and maintenance services for that browser or operating system

Supported Operating Systems

RStudio server products support the following Linux distributions. Within each version of a Linux distribution, we support the latest patch release or “service pack.” In addition to the supported platforms, some of our products support additional operating systems.
