The technology to amass data exceeds our abilities to make use of it. RStudio helps the world make sense of data, regardless of ability to pay.

RStudio’s primary purpose is to create free and open-source software for data science, scientific research, and technical communication. This allows anyone with access to a computer to participate freely in a global economy that rewards data literacy; enhances the production and consumption of knowledge; and facilitates collaboration and reproducible research in science, education and industry. We spend over 50% of our engineering resources on open-source software development, and provide extensive support to the open source data science community.

  • Sustainable Investment: The adoption of our open-source data science software creates demand for our commercial products, which enable teams to adopt open-source data science software at scale. The revenue from our commercial products, in turn, enables ongoing investment in the open-source software that benefits all users.

  • Enabling Data Scientists for today and tomorrow: Our software is already used by millions of people to analyze data, and RStudio is equipping hundreds of thousands of students to be the next generation of people with the skills to make sense of data.

  • Proven Commitment to Community: in addition to our support for data science education, we extensively support the open source data science community through our annual rstudio::conf, the RStudio Community site where hundreds of thousands of open-source and professional users find help, Education resources for learners and teachers, and support for industry-funded organizations such as the R Consortium, NumFocus and Ursa Labs.

  • Focus on Reproducible Data Science: in order to maintain faith in the core data science tools, and allow solutions to be reused, repurposed, shared and widely leveraged, data science results must be reproducible over time and between different users.

Charter

We believe that corporations should strive to fulfill a public beneficial purpose, and that they should be run for the benefit of all of their stakeholders. Consequently, RStudio is registered as a for-profit, Delaware Public Benefit Corporation. Our stated public benefit is to create open-source software for scientific and technical computing. This means that our open-source mission is codified into our charter, and that RStudio’s directors and officers have a fiduciary duty to pursue that mission, along with balancing the needs of all stakeholders (including community, customers, employees, and shareholders).

RStudio is also a Certified B Corporation®, meeting the certification requirements set by the non-profit B Lab (a rigorous assessment of a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community, and environment), indicating that we have met the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, Details of this assessment are available at https://bcorporation.net/directory/rstudio.

We are confident that the best way to achieve our purpose is to operate as an independent company. Our charter establishes an ownership and governance structure to ensure this independence and our ability to sustain investment in open source data science over the long term.
