RStudio’s Approach to Pricing

Our Mission

At RStudio, we are dedicated to sustainable investment in free and open-source software for data science, as part of our mission to help people understand and improve the world through data. In support of this mission, the revenue generated by our commercial software allows us to fund our open-source efforts (such as Shiny and the tidyverse; see our annual report for a full list), while enabling organizations to adopt open-source data science at scale. To learn more about our mission, our charter as a Public Benefit corporation, and our approach to sustainable investment, please see What Makes RStudio Different.

Per User

Most of our products, including RStudio Server Pro, RStudio Connect, and RStudio Team, are priced per user per year, because we believe that this is the best way to deliver simple, predictable, and flexible pricing. Per user pricing is a natural fit for accommodating compute environments (e.g., a Kubernetes cluster) that dynamically scale resources as needed, where a “per-server license” just doesn’t make sense. In addition, this lets our customers avoid the cost and effort of having to count and manage different types of users.

Unlike many user-priced products, our per-user prices decline as the number of users increase, to reflect that in larger communities of users, there may be people who use our products less frequently, and therefore should pay less. For example,

  • RStudio Server Pro Standard is priced at the equivalent of $995 per user, per year for the first 20 users. However, for user 21 the price per user drops to $500.
  • RStudio Connect Standard is priced at the equivalent of $250 per user, per year for the first 100 users. The next 50 users are only $56 per user per year.

The drop off in Connect’s price per user ensures that once the team size is large enough, adding users is inexpensive, regardless of whether they are contributing content or not. There’s no internal provisioning required if a user graduates from being a consumer to a creator. We feel this is far simpler than forcing customers to designate users as publishers and viewers. The overall pricing for Connect is set to reflect this, and to provide Data Science teams a way to reach a wide community of users within their organization, and expand that reach over time, in a very cost-effective way.

RStudio Package Manager is priced by the number of package repositories you require (one, 10, or Unlimited).

Finally, for our largest customers, we offer flexible enterprise license options to further reduce the complexity of managing users and improve the predictability of expenses for budgeting purposes. Contact RStudio Sales for more information about any of these pricing options.
